Sleep: In many ways! primarily sleep allows the circadian (night and day) rhythm cycle to reset. Also in doing so, it allows for the clarity of mind to be reset...Think of our day as a dogsled race. If we don't rest the dogs at night, they'll break down and get injured. Poor sleep, whether from erratic patterns, not enough time, etc - impaired immune system, headaches, fatigue, memory trouble, etc.
