Weaker than ligament: Epiphyseal (growth plate) injuries are common in children's sports because the ligaments are better able to resist certain loads than the caritilage layers of the epiphysis. As a result, an injury mechanism that typically produces a sprain in an adult can produce and epiphyseal fracture in a child.

Epiphyseal Injuries: These injuries are more common in children in sports because these areas are the weakest parts of bones and sporting activities have an increased risk of injury. This shouldn't prevent children from being active and participating in sports, but make parents, coaches and caregivers aware that any injury should be evaluated (sprains, strains, falls, hits, etc).
