Pass or obstruct.: A stone in the ureter may pass or it may obstruct the ureter. The likelihood that a stone will pass decreases significantly the larger it is, especially over 5mm. If the stone fails to pass, obstruction of urine can cause the kidney to swell in a process called hydronephrosis. Over time this can lead to increased risk of infection and kidney atrophy. Work with your urologist for options.

Here are some ...: If luckily with no superimposed infection above the stone, which usually happens to someone with diabetes and recurrent UTI, the stone may grow in size and cause back-up pressure to damage the kidney with a wide variable pace. So, ask and discuss with Doc so to decide when and how to take care of the offending stone.
