Don't get old: Disc shrinkage & degeneration are a part of life. Cracks & bulges appear plus occasional ruptures. So stay in bed you whole life to avoid this. But an active lifestyle demands active treatment: proper body mechanics, proper body weight, adequate exercise, proper sleep, appropriate ergonomic work place. Prevention is better than repair. Same program also works after damage occurs.

Many treatments: Start with physical therapy and core conditioning. At some point an epidural steroid injection might be helpful. If all else fails and your symptoms impact your activities of daily living, surgery can be curative. I would suggest seeing a spine surgeon with expertise in minimally invasive spine surgery if it comes to that.
