What are follicles in the ovaries used for?

Dr. John Paas answered

It contains an egg: The follicle is a small bubble inside the ovary which contains the developing (microscopic) egg. Each cycle, as the egg develops, it is contained within the small fluid-filled follicle. This grows to about 2cm size, and at ovulation the follicle opens at the surface of the ovary, spilling out the fluid and releasing the mature egg.
