Cutis aplasia: A skin defect is occasionally found on the scalp of newborns & may be finger tip sized or as big as a grapefruit in diameter. The small defects usually gradually become smaller with age & simple cleaning & coverage with antibiotic ointment will prevent complications. Over sized defects may overly an enlarged soft spot & a protective helmet & consultation with a plastic surgeon is in order.

Depends: It depends on the type of scalp defect. If the defect is cutis aplasia, or alopecia the abnormal skin can be excised and scalp closed with advanced skin flap that will eliminate the defect. Would wait until newborn has full head of hair.
