It may manifest itself, first, as an arthralgia or backache; second, as a necrosis of the vertebrœ, and, third, as a; charcot spine accompanied by cerebro-spinal degeneration. It may be a life long issue.

Doubt syphilis: Syphilis doesn't cause back pain, or very rarely. When it does, there would be obvious imaging abnormalities (i.e. xray, CT, or MRI). These two problems probably are unrelated to one another.
