No pain before: I do not know what surgery that you will be having, but there would not be expected to be pain before the surgery. There may be very minor discomfort with inserting the small intravenous catheter, but well trained nurses make the sensation minimal. Otherwise there would not be pain before going under anesthesia.

Small holes: Bariatric surgery is done with small incisions and special instuments. All procedures take about one hour. Mild pain like a gallbladder surgery. For our patients, 90% feel great the next day and actually go home the next day. You won't feel anything during surgery. All doctors will give pain meds after surgery. Good luck.

Many different cause: Of coruse the type of surgery is a definite factor. One type of pain- neuropathic- can occur long after the "insult" to the body has healed. This type of pain responds to drugs like gabapentin, snri's and other drugs that work in the nervous system unlike narcotics.
