A 42-year-old member asked:

can you describe how to cure pink eye at home?

Depends: There are three different problems called "pink eye". Bacteria pink eye causes redness and pus in the eye all day. This needs antibiotics. Virus and allergy pink eyes look very similar- redness and possible drainage in the morning, but mostly tearing during the day. They will clear up on their own. Just keep the eyes clean with clear water and wash your hands well. Call doctor if getting worse.

Several ways: Usually this is a clinical diagnosis it is based on the history given, the symptoms, the examination of the eye(s) the type of discharge, and other historical and exam findings. There are some rapid tests to determine if the infection is viral or bacterial. One can also do a smear of the discharge and stain it and determine the type by looking at the slide. Culture can be taken too!

Dr. Richard Bensinger

Pink eye: The usual form of pink eye termed conjunctivitis, is a viral illness with a discrete lifespan of 3-10 days. There is little danger as the body is effective at ridding itself of this pest. The major danger is "social" as you are at risk of spreading this to your friends and colleagues who will not appreciate that at all.
