My 17 years old daughter was diagnosed with bipolar disorder several months ago. i tried giving her ambilify and risperdol. both medicines gave her suicidal thoughts, so i stopped them. should i give her a milder medicine for bp?

Diagnose then treat.: First off make sure the diagnosis fits. Despite some evidence that pediatric BP differs from adults in timeframe, you still need manic (elevated) symptoms and not just irritability for instance. Many kids DX with bipolar are "just" depressed and benefit from more common antidepressants like sertraline or fluoxetine. However if the diagnosis fits, Lamotrigine increasingly of use in adolescents.

See below: Thankfully, there are many mood stabilizers out there that are tolerated well by patients. Unfortunately, some are not tolerated, as in your daughter's case. Once the right medication(s) are found the response can be dramatic.
