A complex question: Without a simple answer. This is a very successful operation for arthritis at the base of the thumb. I generally have my patients in a short arm splint for 10 days. Then they are fitted with a custom hand-based plastic splint that is worn for the next 3 weeks. Then hand therapy starts for about 6 weeks. I let patients do anything they want as long as they have the plastic splint in place.
