Rules of thumb: 1) both eyes, usually a systemic problem, possibly allergies, less likely infectious unless it started in one and is now affecting the other 2) discolored mucous may be indicative of an infection although sometimes allergic eye symptoms can include infectious 3) itchiness and red conjunctiva can be symptoms that include increased tearing and allergies.
