Several: First the egg is fertilized by the sperm and there should be an embryo with genetic material from the sperm and from the eggs (only 2 total sets). The the egg usually divides into 4 cells then 8 cells. The many more cells divide and the genes inside the embryo become activated. The middle of the embryo clears out and a blastocyst forms and when advanced starts to hatch out of its shell.
