Self defining: A space maintainer holds space. Usually used in growing children if baby tooth lost prematurely to prevent adjacent and/or opposing teeth from collapsing into the space required for the underlying permanent tooth to erupt. Can also be used for adults who are awaiting replacement of extracted permanent teeth.

Why space maintainer: If a baby tooth is lost prematurely, you may require a space maintainer allows the permanent tooth enough space to come into the arch without crowding. The patient should be seen by the dentist or orthodontist on a regular basis to monitor the progress of treatment.
