Allergies?: It is possible that this mucous is the result of allergies. It may also be a sign of copd, especially if you are a smoker or exposed to secondhand smoke on a constant basis. Another possibility is an infection though not likely if this is going on for a long time. Recommend a visit to your physician. In the meanwhile drinking plenty of water may reduce the thickness.
