A 27-year-old male asked:

i have a plate in my leg and recently i bumped my leg and it made a small cut/hole, where i can see the plate slightly. how long will it take to heal?

See an orthopedist : And do this asap. Since the plate is exposed, it is contaminated with bacteria and possibly other organisms. It may require therapy with antibiotics, removal and a wide variety of other problems may occur. Do not ignore this. It might cost you your leg if it is not taken care of appropriately.

Get care NOW: Exposed hardware is a very dangerous situation. If there is not already an infection you are at high risk of developing one. This could require removal of the hardware. See an orthopedic surgeon asap.

Hmmmmm: You need to see your doc-- while it may well heal if very small and other factors are favorable, it is a set up for infection to have exposed hardware, so i would not go it alone.

Strain is an injury: Muscle fatigue occurs with working out. A strain is an injury to the muscle when the fibers stretch beyond their physiologic limits. Generally, muscle strains heal in a few weeks, and physical therapy can hasten healing.

No : Once growth plates have fused, usually around 17 or so in boys, growth is done. Stretching the legs to add more height can be accomplished with breaking the long bones in the legs and then resetting them. I've only seen this done in patients with achondroplastric dwarfism. Just stretching the leg muscles will not add height.

It happens...: In about 1 in 100 women, the baby's head compresses a nerve (often the sciatic) as it passes through the pelvic outlet. More likely in first pregnancies and prolonged 2nd stage of labor. Women with nerve injury spent more time pushing in the semi-fowler-lithotomy position than women without. Average duration of symptoms is usually ~2 months.

A 37-year-old member asked:

What's an inexpensive lower limb prosthesis made of?

Dr. Marlis Gonzalez fernandez

It varies: Most leg prosthesis are modular and cost will depend on components. A below the knee (transtibial) will cost less than an above the knee (transfemoral) prosthesis. A basic transfemoral prosthesis (for patients with limited mobility) could include a sach (solid ankle cushion heel) foot, locking knee and custom socket (where the stump fits in). Custom sockets are needed to prevent skin problems.
