Degeneration: A ganglion cyst is a swelling of the wrist joint structures and is usually inflammatory or degenerative . If the ganglion is getting larger or hurting you can have it operated on by an orthopedic surgeon or hand surgeon.

Previous trauma: A ganglion cyst is a benign fluid filled sac and can be associated with previous trauma (e.g. Wrist sprain) which may have created a small tear within the ligaments and capsule of the wrist. Over time, the accumulation of joint fluid creates a cyst which may wax and wane in size over time.
