Why would cigarette companies put tar and carbon monoxide in cigarettes?

Tar unknown: Why tar is in cigarettes is strange. It does not have to be there and i understand there companies that make tar less cigarettes. As to the carbon monoxide it is a by product of all burning and this can not be helped as long as you are going to smoke.
