Gagging: Gagging is a psychological condition that can stimulate a gag reflex. Breathing through your mouth as well as the doctor and their team minimize activity in the gag reflex area. It's also advantageous for your to visualize yourself doing something else to get your mind off the procedure. There are other medical techniques but this is the most simple.

Give it time: When you receive local anesthesia in the mouth, often sensation in the back of the mouth makes it feel as though you cannot swallow. This can cause some anxiety but usually it does not interfere with the acutal swallowing reflex. If you are gagging or unable to breathe you should immediately call for emergency help. If the swallowing reflex is not working it could lead to serious complication.
