Pneumonia etc: A true pneumonia is an inflammatory exudate (protein-rich fluid from injury) in the air spaces. A pneumonitis (as a chest cold) is inflammation confined to the walls of the air spaces. If the airways are inflamed, a bronchitis or bronchiolitis might be the diagnosis. If the inflammation is around the lung, a pleuritis might be diagnosed.
