Good question!: Methadone has many effects on the gravid body and has been linked to increased risk for preterm birth by 2.5-fold in comparison to women not on Methadone (including preterm birth <32 weeks). If the alternative is heroin, then Methadone is just fine - however it is not innocuous. Women on Methadone should be followed by a maternal-fetal medicine specialist and a psychiatrist/drug abuse specialist.
