How does metformin (diabetic medicine) affect the body?

Works on the liver: Metformin is a biguanide and it works to reduce glucose synthesis by the liver during the fasting state. Type 2 diabetes is viewed by the liver as a state of cellular deprivation of glucose due to changes in receptors for Insulin action on these cells preventing entry of glucose in the cellular compartment, or Insulin resistance. By reducing hepatic production it lowers your blood sugar.
