A 48-year-old member asked:

what causes non-hodgkin lymphoma and why does it spread?

Complex question: There are many different types of non-hodgkin's lymphoma and they have many different causes. Some of the lymphomas are caused by viruses and bacteria (some burkitt lymphoma, marginal zone lymphoma of the spleen, acute t-cell lymphoma). Others occur as people age because of the genetic mutations that are continually occurring in the immune system. Lymphomas spread because they are part of the immune system nd immune cells naturally travel around the body.

Disease type: The 2 diseases are closely linked. The hodgkin lymphoma was described by the doctor bearing its name and usually has a specific cell associated with it. This cell is not the target of new therapies for relapsed disease. In general terms, this disease is highly curable whereas some of the many types of non-hodgkin lymphoma are not.

Fever, sweats: The classic "b" symptoms are fever, drenching night sweats, and weight loss. Signs include enlarged lymph nodes, especially in the neck and arm pits, and enlargement of the spleen. Some patients may become anemic and if so would look pale. Diagnosis requires biopsy as many other conditions present similarly. If concerned see your doctor.

Tough question: There are over 40 different types of nhl. Some are curable and some are not. There are certain types of nhl that only need treatment if they cause trouble. They are typically not curable and you treat when needed. But people can live a long life and may not require therapy.
