Complex question: There are many different types of non-hodgkin's lymphoma and they have many different causes. Some of the lymphomas are caused by viruses and bacteria (some burkitt lymphoma, marginal zone lymphoma of the spleen, acute t-cell lymphoma). Others occur as people age because of the genetic mutations that are continually occurring in the immune system. Lymphomas spread because they are part of the immune system nd immune cells naturally travel around the body.
