Chemo or Surgery: There are more options today. Rectal cancer metastatic to liver or lungs can be surgically removed if there are a limited number of tumors not affecting the liver or lung blood supply. Widespread rectal cancer is best treated with chemotherapy. In special circumstances, metastases can be treated with highly focused radiation or drugs can be injected into the tumor to shut down their blood supply.
