Consider options: The risk of losing the pregnancy from amnio is very low (less than half a percent). There are non-invasive tests that can help determine the risk of down syndrome, but much more comprehensive info can be gained by an amnio. You simply have to discuss it with your doctor and weigh the risk and benefits.

Knowledge is power: Discuss your fears about amniocentesis with your obstetrician and find out all the pros and cons of the procedure. Try also to find out all you can about it on your own so you will be better informed to ask the right questions or seek further clarification on the subject from your obstetrician. Good luck.

MaterniT21/Harmony.: Amnio is not your only option; if you are concerned about the risks of invasive prenatal genetic diagnosis, ask your doctor and genetic counselor about maternit21/harmony tests in your blood to check fetal dna! best of luck.
