Variety of things: In the mouth, you may have swelling of the gums, bleeding and pain. Periodontal disease has been associated with heart disease, high blood pressure, risk of stroke and inflammatory diseases. These are not necessarily cause and effect.

From none to severe : Gum disease generally consists from gingivitis ( mild bleeding) to advanced periodontitis( severe bone loss) which can result in tooth abcess or loss. Periodontal disease has been linked to possible heart conditions, or increasing the effects of certain disease such as diabetes , kidney problems, premature birth in pregnancy , etc.
