Distractions: Keep eyes open , stare at something in the room , long deep breaths , place dash of salt on tongue immediately before each impression. Can help most patients but not all . Worth trying.

Impressions: The gag reflex is very powerful but one that you can help with your mind and preparation most if the time. When they start impressions try to avoid thinking about the action as well as try to take slow deep breaths through your nose. One thing a clinician might be able to do is not put so much material in the trays. Tell your dentist if past experiences to come up with a solid game plan.

Fantastic method: I fully agree with all the techniques mentioned by dr. Nimz to prevent gagging. One method that I have used for over 35 years and has never failed me when dealing with adults is having them count backwards by 3's starting with 100 (100, 97, 94). I have never used this technique with children although it should work. Try it and let me know how it worked for you.

Relax: Relax and breath through your nose. Sometimes it helps to lightly keep your hand on the impression tray along with the dentist (but never interfere with the actual process of taking the impression).

Posture: I find sitting completely upright and placing the head slightly chin down, along with breathing through the nose is your best chance for success.

Nitrous oxide: A little nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, reduces the gag reflex.

Wow: All great answers. Also, don't eat for 6 hours prior to impressions. As impression being taken, lift one leg, set it down. Repeat with other leg. Another thing we do is to place a small dollop of impression material on the tip of the patient's nose...Takes their mind off of the impression.
