Yes: Yes they can but sometimes it's just a condition that's been there awhile and only recently diagnosed. In other cases the asthma results from a toxic exposure or infection or is a result of gastroesophageal reflux (gerd).

Yes, unclear cause: There are one associated risk factors (obesity, repeated viral infections), but it is not known why adults get asthma.
