Yes and No: In the short term, yes, the airways become inflamed with asthma attacks, and this leads to overproduction of mucous as well. Typically people recover fully from an asthma attack. However, if asthma goes uncontrolled for years, the airways and lung tissue can eventually scar. Scar tissue, unlike normal tissue, does not function normally. Once scarring occurs, the effects are typically permanent.
