Braces and Avoidance: Gamekeepers thumb is a disruption of the ulnar collateral ligament on the inside of the thumb. There are braces/ gloves that help to protect the ligament depending on your particular sport. A very common mechanism of injury is falling with your hands extended while skiing with poles. Don't put the straps around your wrists and it makes it easier for you to let go if you fall.

Protect your thumb : Gamekeepers thumb is a hyperextension injury caused by the thumb getting caught and pulled backwards as the hand and arm move forwards. It occurs very commonly when skiing when you use the pole straps on your wrist and they pull on the thumb causing the injury. Athletes need to be aware of the mechanism of injury and protect their hands if possible from those positions where they are at risk.
