Common problem: Bronchitis is an inflammatory process in the branches of the lung that leads to accumulation of phlegm & persistent cough. Often patients will cough worse as the treatment begins to kill of germs that are shed into the phlegm. The body coughs as a protective mechanism to get the debris out. Some will cough up to 4-5 wks after treatment.

Complications possib: I would also suggest that you check your pertussis vaccine status, order a pulmonary function test, and/or chest radiograph to further assess. An uncomplicated viral illness usually improves within 10 days. Since you are being treated for a bacterial infection of the lungs, with an antibiotic, complications such as infected fluid around the lungs, an abscess or pneumonia may occur.
