Yes.: Toprol (metoprolol) is a beta blocker, it blocks the beta-adrenergic receptors in the heart and blood vessels. Beta receptors are triggered by adrenaline, so they block the effect of adrenaline on your heart. They decrease the workload of the heart and have been shown in numerous studies to decrease the risk of a heart attack, and prevent death after a heart attack.

Not likely: Toprol, (metoprolol) like other beta blockers, can provide benefit in patients who already have heart disease and have had a heart attack. For someone who only has hypertension, there is no evidence that it will help prevent heart attack. More important thing here is to manage the blood pressure itself, which will definitely help protect the heart.
