Usually for pain: Very often i will drain or aspirate the fluid from a knee if the swelling is causing a large amount of pain or making ambulation difficult sometimes evaluation of the fluid will help make a diagnosis of the etiology whether it be a fracture (blood) or infection(wbcs) or types of arthritis or gout(crystals).
