Wear or infection: The typical knee replacement lasts 10-15 years. In patients who have their knees replaced at an earlier age, they may wear out sooner. As the plastic liner wears out, it produces small particles that may lead to loosening if the prosthesis. This can cause pain or instability. Infections can also produce similar symptoms, see your joint surgeon for an x-ray and examination.
