12 %: There are conventional answers in term of 1500 or 2, 000 mg or 3, 000 mg sodium: i prefer a much more usable systelm of "less than 12% sodium per serving in each container at any one meal. Just btw, brown rice veg beans fruit nuts and seeds have zero sodium i the form that they grow in the field. See www.Thepmc.Org.

Variable: This is a simple question with a complex answer. About 1/3- 1/2 of those with high blood pressure are "salt-sensitive" ; thus do better with salt restriction; for others it does not matter as much. Also, the ratio of sodium to potassium is important. Try restricting to 1500 mg sodium/day for 2 weeks, then add more salt to see if more raises your BP. Consider the DASH diet.
