A member asked:

How does pleurisy affect exchange of gases (external respiration)?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depends on cause: When doctors say pleurisy, they can mean the symptom (pleuritic chest pain) or inflammation of the pleura (the thin layers of tissue surrounding the lung). Whether gas exchange is affected depends on what's causing the pleurisy. Is it a pneumonia, pneumothorax, chemical irritation, something automimmune, a clot? Some conditions would cause more problems with gas exchange than others.
