Takes 3 weeks : Fluoxetine has to build up in your bloodstream and takes about 3 weeks to start working. So its not the kind of thing you take for immediate relief of panic attacks. When it builds up, its more of a prevention for attacks.. Often, you will need more than 10 mg a day of fluoxetine. You should ask your doctor both about raising the dose and about immediate things you can do when an attack comes.

Sometimes : Some patients experience heightened anxiety the first two weeks of taking fluoxetine. Talk to your doctor about strategies for bridging the gap between onset symptoms and effectiveness (usually at 6-8 weeks of taking fluoxetine).
