It is common: But not always present. Swelling is more common. Big toe pain can be a nunber of things. Trauma, gout, arrthritity, joint jamming are some. See podiatrist for complete evaluation.

Yes bruising : Does occur after a fracture. You are not only breaking a bone usually there is a soft tissue injury component as well, and it is the injury of the soft tissue that is causing the black and blue. No different that if a heavy object fell on your foot - likely it would turn black and blue from being bruised....Blood vessels breaking, blood leaking, and getting an accumulation of blood under the skin, .
