Extremely rare: Mortality from epstein-=barr virus infection is exceptionally uncommon and results from complications, such as rupture of the enlarged spleen, secondary bacterial infection, inappropriate management with antibiotics resulting in other infections, etc. There are, however, mononucleosis-like illnesses that can be quite severe at times. Make sure of the diagnosis by seeing a doctor.
