No reliable cure: Teens or adults who catch hepatitis b get sick, and then recover on their own, but about 5% become carriers and always have the virus. Babies who catch hepatitis b become carriers of the virus. The antiviral medications block the virus, so the patient has fewer and fewer numbers of virus if the treatment works. A few patients are called "cured" in that blood tests don't detect the virus any more.
