Don't aggravate it.: Anti-inflamatories may help too. Continued heavy weight bearing will aggravate it like sports, especially those with quick lateral movements like tennis.

Don't reinjury it: The meniscus is supplied by blood vessels in the outer part. If the tear is there it can either healed or be repaired. If it is not there, it will not heal by itself and if you have continued locking or pain may need to have an arthroscoipy.

Meniscus tear: While you can do exercises to strengthen the muscles that support and surround your knee, these will not lead to healing of torn cartilage/meniscus. Avoid high impact and twisting/pivoting activities. Best option is to fix the torn meniscus surgically.

Rest: The best thing you can do is to rest the knee by avoiding high strain activities like running going up stairs and doing recovery exercises. Most of all try to avoid high impact activities with your knees. Recovery may take 6-8 weeks or more depending on the severity. Try things like swimming or biking instead to help your knee recover.
