What do you recommend for someone that has had several incidents with items getting lodged in the esophagus and can't get down?

Swallow eval: I would strongly recommend seeing your doctor and talking with him/her about getting an esophogram. This will look at how well food is moving down your throat and if there are any pockets or things blocking the esophagus. If the esophogram is normal, but you're still having that feeling, then a consultation with a gastroenterologist is warranted.
