What is the prep for upper and lower gi for an 8yo child? what anesthesia? what risks?

UPPER GI: Before having the xray, they give you some liquid laxative the night before the procedure and fleet enema (sodium bisphosphate) in the am. It is safe and no anesthesia is used.

Sedation: For the anesthesia if your child is able to tolerate having an IV placed. The risk is small but it should all be done at a place that is familiar with doing procedures on children. I wouldn't want my child going to a place that only sees a few children a year.

See below: The prep for the upper GI is merely stopping eating. The GI system will clear the top part naturally. The lower GI depends on the GI doctor. Some recommend clear liquids for 24 hours with a fleets enema to try and clear the colon for the scope. Talk to you GI doctor about their practice.
