Edema vrs Inflammat : Inflammation is characterized by redness, increased local temperature or warmth, immobilization of the area, pain and swelling or edema. Swelling is just too much fluid out of the vessels into the soft tissue. Not all swelling means inflammation.

The chemistry: Swelling is fluid with in the soft tissue, it can be painless and related to any number of things. Inflammation is usually caused be irritation and is the bodies response to that. It is necessary to bring chemicals and cells that allow healing to occur but when unchecked can cause damage itself.
