Treatment can help: You don't have to through life dep and anx. I would recommend finding a good therapist in the area. I have a number of clients that also pick at their skin. One of them due to being a nervous habit the other due to it being a compulsive behavior. Both successfully overcame it, but the point is you're not alone.

Therapy: Although you say this is an unconscious habit, you seem to be very aware that this is occurring. Unless you want to become a very scarred person, this is something you really should address. Speak to your doctor about a referral to a qualified therapist. Cognitive therapy will most likely be very useful for you. Please take care of yourself. There enough things that can harm you in this world.

Find BFRB Expert!: Chronic skin picking - "dermatillomania"- is referred to as body-focused repetitive behavior (bfrb). It can arise in response to (a) emotions -anxiety, fear, boredom, excitement; &/or (b) detecting some irregularity/imperfection on the skin/scalp. Bfrbs can produce pleasurable sensations & can relieve tension. Bfrbs can be associated w/other disorders- physical &/or psychological.

Psych then medical : The goal is to treat the "picking" using behavioral cognitive therapy in combination with the appropriate medical regimen for the underlying anxiety it ocd. Once the picking is controlled you can focus on interventions to improve any scarring using traditional techniques such as dermabrasion, peels, resurfacing, etc. Use sunblock & avoid tobacco.
