A member asked:

If your thyroid produces too much hormone, will removing part of it correct the problem?

All or none removed: Hyperthyroidism has many causes, from inflammation to pituitary tumors to emotional stress states. Autoimmunity(the attack of one self by your own immune system) is a frequent cause. I have seen reduction of thyroid tissue as a treatment, but that approach usually needs repeating. Find the cause of the autoimmunity if possible, or remove a tumor if present..Until metabolic dysfunction is ruled.

Generally no: Depends upon cause of hyperthyroid. The most common causes would not likely benefit long term from surgery.
