Better...: Note: gonorrhea is a bacteria and not a virus. Antibiotics don't work on viral infections. To answer you question, doxy is a recommended drug to treat gonorrhea. Why? Gonorrhea resistance to cephalosporins (a penicillin like antibiotic) is rising; either Doxycycline or Azithromycin is effective in treating gonorrhea, and is recommended by the cdc.

Not reliable: Many gonorrhea bacteria are resistant to the tetracycline antibiotics, including doxycycline; it is never recommended as the sole treatment for gonorrhea. Recommended treatment is an injection of ceftriaxone (Rocephin), which is entirely safe in almost everyone with penicillin allergy, plus either azithromycin or doxycycline by mouth. But never doxycycline alone.
