NO: Chiari 1 is an incidental finding of low lying cerebellar tonsils. This finding is of minimal clinical significance unless a degree of pressure causes some specific symptoms. In occasional cases decompressive surgery can relieve some of these symptoms. In some cases the surgery just causes more discomfort. The findings of the chiari 1 do not change with surgery.
