Depends on symptoms: Most patients with chiari i malformation have no symptoms, and don't need surgery. Findings that would require surgery include cranial nerve dysfunction, swallowing problems, arm or leg weakness, numbness, syrinx formation in the spinal cord. In this group of patients, surgery can help. You should be thoroughly evaluated by a neurosurgeon to see if you require treatment or just observation.
