Petit mal seizures: Petit mal (absence) seizures are 'staring spells' — which are a brief, sudden lapse of consciousness. Absence seizures are more common in children than adults. Compared with other types of epileptic seizures, absence seizures appear mild-- but can be dangerous. Children with absence seizures have to supervised while swimming etc. Teenagers may be restricted from driving. A good neurologist is key.
